2013 is coming to an end, and it’s time to take stock at the (disastrous) state of our digital freedoms. Every year the World Wide Web Foundation issues the Web Index, a multi-dimensional measure of global Web growth and impact. And this year, Edward Snowden’s revelations and the NSA scandal have definitely taken their toll. Just have a look at the map below: US, UK, Canada, and Australia join the ranks of Malaysia, Mali, Kenya, Egypt, and Yemen as countries where ‘citizens have little or no protection against government surveillance’.
