I conducted an interview with La Via Libera, the Italian magazine dedicated to advocating for civil society. In this conversation with journalist Rosita Rijtano I discussed the “Turk,” a mechanical hoax from 1769 built to mimic a chess player but secretly controlled by a concealed human operator. Amazon’s micro-task platform, “Mechanical Turk,” founded by Jeff Bezos in 2005, retains its name, which symbolizes its origins. It remains a platform where researchers and businesses hire workers for specific tasks. Despite nearly two decades of technological advancement, little has changed. As I emphasize in my interview, “We, the human workforce, are the true driving force behind artificial intelligence.” Even ChatGPT, OpenAI’s celebrated chatbot, owes its capabilities to human intervention.
